I am right now reading an article from The Fanfic Symposium. This particular fanfic is called In Defense of Mary Sue and was written by Debra Fran Baker on 7/29/1999, or so their archive states. The defense I have to say is weak.

I had a dream last night, though some fanfic writers might consider it a nightmare. It deals with the fact that I dealt with someone that at times gets dubbed, a fan brat, but as one of my friends pointed out, that isn’t an appropriate term.

I’ve been writing fanfiction for a few years, and the concept of the Mary Sue, or Gary Stu, tends to crop up a lot in discussion. The concept, or troupe, is something that tends to be hard for some people to grasp.
